The 1904 Ford Model AC Restoration: The First to Arrive in Mexico

Jul 09, 2025

For Ford, history isn't just a memory; it's a living force that boost our future. In this year of celebrating our 100th anniversary in Mexico, a group of talented engineers has gifted us a journey back in time, honoring our legacy with passion.

Imagine 1904. Dirt roads, streetcars coexisting with horses, and then, suddenly, something shocking appears: a Ford Model AC. No windshield, no doors, wooden seats, and carriage wheels, yet its spirit captured everyone's attention. This model, a direct predecessor to Henry Ford's first commercial car, not only marked the beginning of an industry, but also a new way of understanding mobility. It featured a powerful engine, precise steering, and a suspension that smoothed out the roads. With only 1,500 units ever produced, this particular vehicle holds a special place in Mexico's history, as records indicate it was the first Model AC to arrive in the country.

The true value of this restoration lies not just in the car, but in the hands and minds that made it possible. What began as an after-hours passion project for a group of employees at Ford of Mexico's Engineering Center blossomed into an unparalleled initiative, driven by their dedication and the unwavering support of leaders like Marcos Pérez, former Product Development Director for Ford of Mexico, and Juan Santillán, the current director of the area. This collaborative effort, which included external clubs and embraced the entire Ford culture, proves that moving into the future doesn't mean forgetting our beginning.

The process spanned from 9 to almost 13 months. The complete ash wood body, the original bronze steering wheel, the authentic brown color with five layers of paint – every detail was meticulously restored. The tires presented a significant challenge, on that was overcome by an incredible find in Tennessee: the very last batch of smooth gray 1904 tires. Even the two-cylinder engine was restored, integrating invisible modern solutions, such as hidden batteries, to maintain authenticity.

Every screw, every sound from the engine of this Ford Model AC is a tribute to that era and a glimpse into the future. It's proof of the tireless effort, commitment, and passion that defines Ford. Watching this legend come to life invites us to experience our 100-year journey with all five senses: to smell the engine and imagine the crunch of the wheels. It's our history, our passion. It's Ford. There's so much more to discover, to experience, and to celebrate.

Our sincere thanks to the team who made this possible: Héctor Romo de Vivar, Leobardo Hernández de Luna, and Rafael Hernández.
