Rooted in Community: Ford Silverton Plant Celebrates World Environment Day with Action, Education, and Heart

Jun 12, 2026

On Friday, June 5, 2026, the Ford Silverton Plant came alive with a deep, shared purpose as employees and leadership gathered to celebrate World Environment Day. The day beautifully blended hands-on environmental action with community spirit, highlighting the practical steps everyone can take to build a greener tomorrow.

A living symbol of resilience and growth took root on the plant's Gate 2 lawn. With the expert help of Bidvest Top Turf, Ford’s executive staff planted the majestic Acacia Sengalia Galpini tree. This native species is unique for its natural defence mechanisms, releasing protective hormones when it senses danger—making it a perfect metaphor for proactive care and environmental stewardship.

To bring the message of conservation home, every employee received a small potted succulent. The choice of plant was highly intentional; in South Africa’s water-scarce climate, these hardy, low-maintenance plants serve as a daily, beautiful reminder to conserve water. By encouraging water-wise gardening at home, the initiative empowered team members to carry the spirit of World Environment Day beyond the plant gates.

The event also focused on community health and responsible waste management. The onsite clinic team hosted a dedicated stand to educate employees on the correct disposal of expired medicines. Staff were reminded that pharmaceuticals should never be discarded in regular waste or down the drain, where they can contaminate water systems. Instead, employees were encouraged to use the dedicated green bin at the onsite clinic or visit their nearest local pharmacy for safe disposal.

Adding a captivating educational element to the day, Ford welcomed Mavhungu Malima, a Biodiversity Officer with the Gauteng Department of Environment based at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. Malima brought the reserve’s wonders directly to the plant, showcasing a fascinating display of preserved wild animals. The interactive exhibit gave employees a rare, up-close look at local wildlife, fostering a deeper appreciation for South Africa's rich biodiversity.

Through these displays, Malima shared how biodiversity serves as one of South Africa's greatest natural assets, supporting healthy ecosystems, local livelihoods, and sustainable economic opportunities. The showcase also addressed critical environmental challenges—such as climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and illegal harvesting—inspiring employees to become active custodians of their natural heritage so that future generations can inherit a healthy, resilient, and thriving environment.

Translating these conservation principles into industrial action, Ford's suppliers also took center stage, showcasing how cutting-edge technology and business operations can align with environmental stewardship. Karcher, a valued partner, demonstrated innovative cleaning solutions designed to drastically reduce water consumption. Their high-pressure cleaning systems prove that top-tier performance does not have to come at the expense of precious resources. Furthermore, they demonstrated water recycling technology capable of reclaiming and reusing up to 98% of water in professional vehicle wash facilities—offering a powerful tool for reducing water footprints and supporting long-term sustainability.

Adding to the day's focus on holistic sustainability, Tsebo Solutions highlighted their commitment to eco-friendly operations. Through engaging demonstrations, Tsebo showcased practical ways businesses can reduce their environmental impact. Their displays focused on energy management, eco-friendly hygiene services, waste reduction initiatives, and sustainable catering solutions, illustrating how green practices can be seamlessly integrated into everyday corporate life to support a more sustainable future.

With these diverse and inspiring displays lining the venue, the plant buzzed with energy throughout the day. Attendees toured the exhibits, asked questions, and gathered around a vibrant pledge wall. One by one, team members signed their names, making personal commitments to reduce water usage, increase recycling, and actively champion green practices at work and at home.

By the time the event concluded, the Ford Silverton Plant community walked away with tangible reminders of their pledge: thriving new trees, water-smart succulents, and a renewed dedication to protecting the planet. It was a true celebration of World Environment Day, deeply rooted in community, action, and Ford’s ongoing journey toward a sustainable future.
